Winnsboro Location
Winnsboro Bakery & Cafe, Winnsboro, occupies the bottom floor of the historic
R. G. Andrews building, built in 1901 by business mogul Roland Gwynne Andrews. Andrews
was said to have been an early day Sam Walton, dealing in everything from groceries,
clothing, furniture, and undertaking services.
The bottom floor of the Andrews building was designed and built to serve as a bank.
The Merchants Planters State Bank occupied the building from 1909 until 1927. The Cain
Banking Company occupied the building from 1928 until the late 1960s. The original 100+
year old safes are today used as storage rooms. The safes have 16-inch walls and the
original safe doors.
The upstairs served as offices to Elizabeth Suiter who is remembered as a successful
attorney (and the first woman in Texas to pass the bar), Winnsboro mayor, a member of
the Texas House of Representatives, and an outstanding community leader.
